How could we help?
Leveraging optimization potential
Our customer, Knorr-Bremse AG, is the global market leader for braking systems and a leading supplier of other systems for rail and commercial vehicles.
Knorr-Bremse products make a significant contribution to greater safety and energy efficiency on rails and roads worldwide.
Around 33,000 employees at over 100 locations in some 30 countries develop and produce innovative solutions and services that meet the highest technological standards.
As an innovator in its industries, the company has been driving developments in mobility and transportation technologies for almost 120 years and has a head start in the field of networked system solutions.
Knorr-Bremse is one of the most successful German industrial groups and benefits from the key global megatrends: urbanization, sustainability, digitalization and mobility.
The task: For Knorr-Bremse SfN GmbH, the division for commercial vehicles, we were to review the area dimensions and the logistics concept of an existing rough plan for an expansion of the plant structure and develop a transition scenario that would enable the development of the target image.
Objective: To support the optimization of the entire value chain.

Our contribution
Challenges and solutions
As part of its product and production strategy, Knorr-Bremse SfN GmbH is considering optimizing the entire value chain at the Aldersbach site.
Continuous step-by-step expansions have created bottlenecks in production and logistics, as well as inefficient structures in some areas, which make further growth difficult.
Possible changes and expansions to the site were already roughly planned in advance.
The plant manager at Aldersbach wanted to have this planning reviewed in some areas by our external specialists with regard to optimization potential.
Results
In the first step, we recorded the existing processes and intensities and dimensioned the areas for the target image.
In a subsequent layout workshop, we developed various layout variants with the Knorr-Bremse team and evaluated them with the help of the utility value analysis.
The optimization of the material flow was important here.
We were able to clearly illustrate this in the planning with the help of the visTABLE tool.
In addition to the area dimensioning, we were also asked to review the planning of the logistics concept with a focus on the warehouse layout, number of storage spaces, storage technology, etc.
Based on these factors, we selected a favored target image together with the Knorr-Bremse team.
Successful collaboration
Lasting effect
Once the target image had been established, it was important that the new plant structure could be implemented in individual construction phases and that there was a sensible transition scenario that could be transferred to the target image in the future.
In the next step, we also worked out a layout for the transition scenario, which only requires minimal relocation movements towards the target image.
We also dimensioned the areas for this and differentiated between what could be realized in the new building right from the start and what could be mapped in the existing plant.
The task here was to work out the individual steps for the transition from the transition scenario to the target image.
