Our customer Montblanc is a renowned manufacturer of luxury writing instruments.
Montblanc combines the finest European craftsmanship with time-honored designs and the highest quality and produces the famous, handmade writing instruments in the Hamburg manufactory in the legendary Montblanc tradition.
Montblanc’s experience and passion for excellence is reflected in the perfection with which new inspirations and legendary designs have been transformed into works of art to “inspire” writing since 1906.
The task: to introduce SAP Advanced Planning and Optimization (APO) to improve production planning.
As SAP APO was already being used in sales forecasting, the decision was made to extend the scope of application to production planning and thus increase the efficiency and effectiveness of production planning.
Objective: Optimization of manual planning processes and integration of SAP APO for greater efficiency and identification of further optimization potential.

Challenges and solutions
Until 2023, Montblanc’s production planning was largely carried out manually and outside of SAP by Montblanc experts.
However, the increased complexity of the planning processes (increased market volatility and volumes, reduced batch sizes and life cycles) made process optimization necessary.
Montblanc developed the first version of production planning with APO without external help and decided to involve ifp consulting for a thorough review and validation in the early stages of implementation.
Results
We validated the general Montblanc APS approach and the new processes, identified further optimization potential and provided Montblanc with concrete measures and a roadmap for the successful rollout of SAP APO.
The result was increased transparency and accuracy in the planning process across all production stages, improved utilization of production capacities and resources and more efficient planning cycles with the automation of planning tasks and the fine-tuning of planning models.
