Our contribution

Approach and methodology

We have experienced a change in logistics requirements in Basel and Kaiseraugst.
In the past, logistics requirements came primarily from stable product segments with low product variance and large volumes.
However, due to customer needs and Roche’s focus on personalized medicine, shifts in logistics requirements can be observed, which tend to lead to greater product variance and fluctuations between small and large volumes.

More (logistical) individual events and need for higher capacities than planned.
These new logistical requirements necessitated closer cooperation between the logistics units on a case-by-case basis and required more flexible infrastructural and personnel capacities than previously planned in the long term.
At the same time, the availability of new technologies enables forward-looking solutions.

Challenges and solution

The goal for the future is to manage the increased complexity of the product portfolio and anticipate new logistical requirements in a structured, open approach to anticipate future needs.
To achieve this, we are creating the blueprint for a new operating model that promotes efficiency and synergies.

Result and effect

Through closer links between local and global players, research into future market needs and an integrated view of logistics requirements from different stages of production, we were able to establish a structured, coordinated logistics network with modular and expandable logistics solutions in order to identify and meet future needs at an earlier stage.

A look into the future

Lasting effect

This path to logistical excellence was characterized by milestones: In 2022, the value proposition laid the foundation and identified the main drivers of the open flow approach.
In 2023, the asset, cooperation and portfolio blueprints were meticulously created.
Each step brings us closer to our goal of redefining the entire operating model in order to be successful.
Now, from 2024, we begin the implementation phase with actionable recommendations and a roadmap.
