Factory concepts and rough layout planning

Often, initial ideas of what the future factory or redesign of the existing production facility should look like already exist at the beginning of a planning project. There are no limits to creativity. But there is a wide range between creative design approaches and functional factory planning.

Concept planning is used to develop and compare different factory structure variants. In particular, the focus is on:

• Development of target processes (value stream mapping)
• Development of an ideal functional diagram
• Selection of the appropriate production concept
  (Shop floor production vs. island production vs. line production)
• Design and dimensioning of different real factory structure variants
• Creative block layout development with digital support from an innovative touch planning table
• Material flow simulation with the latest digital tools
• Structured and transparent evaluation of variants based on quantitative and qualitative criteria

The development of basic plant concepts and visualization, initially at the block layout level, are the core of this phase. These variants are created based on the defined TARGET processes and the dimensioning of all relevant areas.

In preparation, automation concepts for assembly and logistics (e.g. AutoStore, shuttle warehouse, assembly robot, human-robot collaboration) are reviewed for their customer-specific suitability. The development of possible plant structure variants takes into account all building, production, process and quality-related restrictions as well as future requirements. In the next step, these variants are compared with the help of a technical-economic utility analysis. Quantitative and qualitative evaluation criteria are taken into account for this purpose. The evaluation of the variant comparison determines idealplant concept at block layout level as well as the future rough material flow.
